In May 2022 MTCF paid for WiFi installation at Lobethal Primary School. That enabled the children to use the tablets donated by U.K. based Redmaids Girls School. Also, to aid the children’s development of information and communication technology (ICT) skills, MTCF gave one year funding for a teacher’s post.

There are five primary schools and one secondary school in that region. Only one of them has donated tablets. The rest have neither computers, laptops nor tablets.

In all the schools, only a small number of the children come from homes where a member of the extended family owns a mobile phone.

16 cyclists successfully completed the Thuso Mandela Cycleride on Sunday 20 July. This covered 40 miles from Walthamstow up into Epping Forest to North Weald in Essex. It was quite gruelling with numerous hills and some off road stretches around High Beach. The weather ranged from sunny and too hot at lunchtime, to heavy downpours by late afternoon. The final cyclists returned after 6pm, after a long but satisfying day. There were 2 punctures, and a few gear problems, but no serious incidents.

The departure took place at 10.30am from Grosvenor Park Road in Walthamstow. Cllr Terry Wheeler, the Mayor of Waltham Forest, did the official send off. Mmapula Tladi-Small, the Chair of Thuso, spoke about the importance of Thuso’s work. This year marks 20 years of freedom in South Africa, with South Africa’s first free and fair elections taking place in 1994, after decades of anti-apartheid activities. Nelson Mandela was elected President, and his Birthday would have been the 18 July. For many years July was a focus for activities, like the 2 Mandela Concerts at Wembley Stadium, and also numerous cyclerides, during his long period of imprisonment.

Thuso recently launched a new appeal to provide lamps to the children and families in South Africa, because children without light can’t study. About 80% of homes in South Africa now do have access to electricity, but power cuts are still common, especially in rural areas. Up to 40% of South Africans still use kerosene regularly for heating, lighting and cooking, which is a highly-flammable and toxic fuel. Others rely on torches with expensive batteries for lighting. Now a new generation of cheap, high-performing solar lights can provide clean, safe lighting and phone charging. These lights cost relatively little, last over five years and require no specialist installation or maintenance. £7.50 pays for a study light, £15 for a family lantern and £35 for a solar lantern and mobile charger. Sponsorship from the cycleride will support this appeal.

Gerard Omasta-Milsom, the Thuso Cycleride Co-ordinator, stated “This cycleride will have raised hundreds of pounds to help children in South Africa. Back in 1988 I did a Lands End to London Cycleride as part of the campaign to release Nelson Mandela from prison, organised by the Anti-Apartheid Movement. Things have now really changed, and we are able to support a democratic South Africa, the rainbow nation.”

It was a glorious summer day for Thuso’s annual garden party in Walthamstow on Sunday 22 June. More than 100 supporters came together to fundraise for children in South Africa. The party, which was generously hosted once again by Gerard and Naima Omasta-Milsom, was a resounding success and raised a record-breaking £1,167 for the charity’s ongoing projects.

Chair Mmapula Tladi-Small told the gathering about the 50 children at Thuto Lesedi Secondary School sponsored by Thuso supporters, as well as the charity’s feeding programme, which provides lunch for 600 children and food parcels for 350 at weekends. Ms Tladi-Small also outlined Thuso’s work with Limpopo primary school, including a new project to provide solar lamps for pupils.

The party was also addressed by Xolani Xala, head of the London branch of the African National Congress. Mr Xala thanked everyone present for the ongoing support given to children in South Africa, paying tribute to all those who had played a role in the Anti-Apartheid movement.

Jean Lambert, Green Party MEP for London, and Councillor Richard Sweden, Acting Mayor of Waltham Forest, also came to show their support. Entertainment was provided by the young, energetic steel band Nostalgia, as guests enjoyed home-cooked food in the garden.
