Community Heart

Community H.E.A.R.T (Health, Education, and Reconstruction Training), was originally set up by Denis Goldberg, who was imprisoned with Nelson Mandela, to help with reconstruction and education post apartheid. They have many ongoing projects, and we support them in their “book & 10pence campaign”. Historically ‘ Blacks Only’ Schools had no books. There is still a huge requirement for children’s books to fill a gaping need in schools and public libraries to help the new generation of children become literate. English is the main language of education and government and we all can help by collecting books that are grown out of or being cleared out in schools plus sending “10p’s” to help with transportation costs. More than two million books have already been sent since 1995, and millions more are still needed. Waltham Forest Thuso in South Africa collects books, and sorts and boxes them.. We also raise money to buy new books that feature black children, black history and African stories. Thuso made £874 from fêtes etc in 2005 to purchase them.
